Demi Wright, 22, died three weeks after her cancer diagnosis.
A British makeup artist with an “infectious smile” died after doctors misdiagnosed a rare and aggressive form of cancer as pregnancy.
Demi Wright, 22, went to the hospital with pain in her back and doctors admitted her to a maternity ward because she was showing signs of pregnancy.
News of a baby on the way quickly turned into tragedy when her condition became worse and doctors discovered that the pain was actually caused by a quickly progressing tumor.
The young woman from the town of Colchester died on Feb. 23, three weeks after the diagnosis of terminal adenocarcinoma.
Wright, who worked as a makeup artist for Lancome, had an “infectious, beautiful smile,” according to her heartbroken father.
“When we found out the cancer was terminal, she lifted herself up, she patted the bed and said, ‘Dad, come and sit here.’ She gave me a big hug and said: ‘It’s going to be okay,’ Chris Wright, her father, told the Daily Gazette.
Wright was intially admitted to the maternity ward before doctors diagnosed her with cancer.
“The next day, she passed away,” he said.
“We feel robbed,” her boyfriend, Mitch Gregory, told the Daily Gazette. “It needs to be stressed how much courage she had. She’s our inspiration now.”
Dr. Helen Webberley, from Oxford Online Pharmacy, told the Huffington Post that Wright’s condition is known as a “molar pregnancy.”
“Initially, a molar pregnancy acts in the same way as a conventional pregnancy, tests are positive due to the release of the HCG hormone and there is growth in the uterus. It is only when the patient comes for their 12-week scan that a molar pregnancy is detected,” Webberley said.
Wright’s family has set up a crowdfunding page to raise money for Cancer research — by Friday they had reached their goal of approximately $ 2900.
