John ‘Hot Rod’ Williams had plenty of battles with Patrick Ewing.
John “Hot Rod” Williams, a frontcourt fixture for Cleveland’s contending teams of the late 1980s and early ‘90s, is battling cancer.
The 53-year-old was diagnosed with prostate cancer six months ago and the disease has spread to the point where he’s currently hospitalized in Louisiana.
“His family is with him,” agent Mark Bartelstein told Cleveland.com. “It’s a very serious situation.”
A 6-11 forward from Tulane, Williams played nine of his 13 seasons with the Cavaliers, averaging 11 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game for his career. His Cavs teams — with Mark Price, Craig Ehlo and Brad Daugherty — had the misfortune of losing to Michael Jordan’s Bulls four times in six playoff appearances between 1987-88 and 1992-93.
“John loved to talk about all those great battles between the Cavs and Bulls with Michael,” Bartelstein told Cleveland.com.
