Former President Jimmy Carter, seen in Nashville last month.
Former President Jimmy Carter is now reportedly cancer-free.
The 91-year-old ex-president announced Sunday his cancer is gone, just months after saying the illness had spread to his brain.
A friend told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Carter broke the good news Sunday morning while teaching his weekly class at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Ga.
“He said he got a scan this week and the cancer was gone,” said the friend, Jill Stuckey.
“The church, everybody here, just erupted in applause.”
Carter’s camp has not confirmed the announcement and the church did not immediately return requests for comment.
America’s 39th President announced the ailment in August after undergoing a procedure to remove a small mass from his liver. Carter disclosed weeks later the cancer had spread to his brain, but still said he expected a full recovery.
“I’m perfectly at ease with whatever comes,” he said in late August.
“I’m ready for anything. I’m looking forward to a new adventure.”
The Carter Center said in November the cancer had stopped spreading and the former leader was “responding well to treatment.”
