Sandy Alderson missed the GM meetings due to a medical procedure.
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has cancer and will not attend the winter meetings. The cancer is treatable.
The 68-year-old will undergo 8-to-12 weeks of chemotheraphy and the Mets say he will continue to work with the team, though his role may be limited at times. The type of cancer was not disclosed.
“As you know, Sandy went in for a medical procedure three weeks ago,” Mets COO Jeff Wilpon said Friday. “Surgery was performed at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York and as a result of that procedure, the doctors confirmed that Sandy has cancer. The doctors believe and have told Sandy that the cancer is very treatable and are optimistic about a full recovery.”
Alderson collapsed during a meeting with reporters at Citi Field following the World Series. It’s unclear if that incident was releated to his current condition. He missed the GM meetings shortly thereafter for what the team called a “medical procedure,” though they did not elaborate.
Wilpon said that the Mets would not be providing additional updates on Alderson’s status.
